How to drive a bus with Fuzz Townshend

Fuzz Townshend Tyre Teacher

Fuzz Townshend is known for his car restoration skills and his love of classic vehicles on screen, so it’s no surprise that he harbours a very impressive collection.

As Landsail brand ambassador and Tyre Teacher, Fuzz invited us to see his classic Daimler Fleetline Bus. We joined him as he hit the road, sharing an exclusive run down of how to safely manoeuvre the double decker through some tricky terrains.

Fuzz is no stranger to driving classic vehicles, however, this one is probably the one that requires the most skill, and below are some of his top tips for driving a bus:

Watch out for tree overhang

Fuzz suggests it’s crucial to understand your surroundings. Particularly whilst driving down narrow country lanes, ensure you avoid low branches as they can cause significant damage to the bus’s exterior if hit at speed and leave debris in the road which is a hazard for other road users.

Stay central and focused

According to Fuzz, buses can be “wind-catching monsters”, so it’s key to keep central to the road, this will also help ensure maximum comfort for any passengers. Remember not to become complacent, and always look ahead – you need to be able to anticipate anything that could happen on the road in front of you. Luckily for Fuzz, he doesn’t have to transport that many people…

Have eyes and ears everywhere

Comfort and safety are the main goals – you need to have eyes and ears everywhere. When driving large vehicles such as buses, your mirrors will be your best friends, so make sure to check them frequently. To help you stay focused on the road, the lack of instrumentation in the driver’s cab will help you, as it minimises outside noise and other potential distractions whilst driving.
